A far from comprehensive list comprised of mostly unrelated “stuff” that has left a notable impression on me in 2012:

• Still making mistakes, still learning from them.

• Being greeted by a puzzling pile of the still-wrapped, pink-flavored Starburst someone left behind on the bus.

• Spending a week in Mexico over the summer, where I had the opportunity to not only watch my best friend present his thesis, but celebrate his birthday the day after in beautiful Huatulco.  Oh, and the spindly snake that had us both screaming and clutching each other during our walk back from the beach.

• The tortilla squirrel, the painted owl hanging above my desk, and my plant-babies.

• Sitting with my sister and Elim at the Inner Harbor as the sun danced across the surface of the water, then playing Spades a few days later against my guffawing mother, who kicks my butt at everything.

• Getting to spend the day in Gettysburg with my good friend, Katherine Hall, and all the kind postcards she sent me over the year.

• The incredible amount of support I’ve received from the kind people I’ve spoken with through various Internet outlets—the same people that bother listening to my music.

• Meeting and making friends in Chicago (Jason & Kirstie Shanley, Tom Lecky, Attilio Novellino, Allie Alvarado), and answering questions for Justin Snow’s thoughtful and passionate Anti-Gravity Bunny.

• Receiving an e-mail on my birthday from the super sweet Elizabeth Willson.

• Devoting much more needed time to reading and writing.

• The man who made his way onto the bus—cane in hand—and said, “If you don’t recognize your own beauty, I ain’t mad atcha.  It took me about 40 years to recognize mine”.  He hadn’t a smile on his face, but you could see it in his eyes.

• Watching the seasons pass, getting a year older, and not knowing for sure whether the piece of plastic stuck swaying in the tree outside my window will still be there after I’m gone.

• Seeing my mother and sister laugh through Skype on Christmas evening, and feeling their warmth from miles away.
